The 14-year-old ranked ahead of home favourites Andrzej Soltyk and Aleksandra Soltyk to top the standings, totaling a score of 63.3. Andrzej scored 61.2 points while Aleksandra scored 59.4 points after nine rounds. Poh shook off an early setback when her shoe came off at the beginning of her routine.
“At first I wasn’t very sure whether to continue, but I saw my mom’s face and she was like ‘GO!’ so I just continued,” the Singaporean teen told Channel NewsAsia.
Despite losing her shoe midway through her routine in the final round, Singapore’s Kyra Poh went on to win the Freestyle Junior category at the FAI World Cup in Poland. (Video: Team Firefly Singapore Facebook page)
It was actually really difficult without the shoe …
“It was actually really difficult without the shoe because my routine had a move that required me to run on the net and it was really slippery and difficult for that last part. So I was really stoked and happy when I finished it.”
Poh trained three times a week as part of Team Firefly Singapore, in the lead-up to the World Cup in Poland. She practices her indoor skydiving routines at iFly Singapore in Sentosa, which has the only accessible vertical wind tunnel in the country.
The School of the Arts (SOTA) student, who is also this year’s Australian Championship Freestyle Open champion, added that she hopes the gold medal will boost the sport’s popularity in Singapore.
“I’m rooting for it to be an Olympic sport one day,” said Poh.
Also in the World Cup, Poh and her teammate Choo Yi Xuan placed fourth for Team Firefly in the Dynamic 2-way category on Saturday. They finished behind teams Vipers, France 1 2WD and SUISSE One.
